Answers

  1. Is Chaoscope open source?
Chaoscope is not open source yet. The source will become public when version 1.0 is released.
  2. Will Chaoscope be ported to MacOS X or Linux?
Not in the short term. Once the project is open source however, it's likely that developers with experience in porting Windows projects to other operating systems will join in.
  3. Are Chaoscope pictures copyright free?
Yes. You can sell your Chaoscope pictures as long as your are the author of these pictures.
  4. How can I contribute to the project?
  5. You may:
    • create a picture gallery online, and promote Chaoscope by adding a banner
    • send suggestions and features request to
    • Participate to beta-testing

  6. How do I become a beta-tester?
The perfect beta-tester profile goes as follow:
    • Has beta-tested Chaoscope and reported a bug
    • Has been a beta-tester before (for a similar software)
    • Is a hardcore fractalist
    • Has an online gallery which includes Chaoscope renders
    • Has a programming background
    • Has a very low tolerance for bugs and instable applications
    • Has lots of free time

Beta-testing recruitment is usually announced on the News page and the mailing-list. If you think you match this profile, send an email to and request to become a beta-tester.
  7. I have a great idea for Chaoscope. Shall I submit it?
Yes, any suggestions are welcome. Keep in mind someone else may have submitted the same great idea before. Currently, the most frequently requested features are:
    • Export of attractor geometry to DXF or ASCII file
    • Complete animation user interface
    • 3D stereoscopy for renders

File export is very likely to appear in 0.4. 3D stereoscopy isn't a costly feature and it will be implemented soon. Animation won't make it before 1.0, use Batch Processing until then. Other features already planned for 0.4 are:
    • Perspective
    • Color perspective (or Haze)
    • Color editor
    • Gradient editor and browser
    • Interface for lights in Solid mode
  8. When will the next version be released?
This is a very good question. It took just under a year to release 0.2 and two years to release 0.3. The release date has slipped many times (beta-testing was first supposed to happen in July/August 2005) so it is very hard to give any precise date for the next release. Hopefully once the foundations are sufficiently stable, development cycle pace should increase.
  9. When I try to create a project in Light or Plasma mode, I get the following error message:
"Access violation at address 00000000. Read of address 00000000."

Chaoscope 0.3 was meant to detect if your graphic card is incompatible with the new preview, but failed to do so. It has been fixed in the 0.3.1 version.
  10. Will Chaoscope interface be translated to another language?
Chaoscope hasn't been designed to facilitate interface translation by third parties. However, since this is a frequent request, all language related resources will be accessible to whoever wish to translate the interface before version 1.0 is released.
  11. Why can't I manually set the Width or Height of the project once it's created?
You must press Enter after you've typed a new value in the Width or Height text box as explained in the Manual.
